ORIGIN OF THE DANDIE DINMONT TERRIER

Stemming from the same stock as the Border, Lakeland, Bedlinton and Welsh, and from the north where England becomes Scotland, trotted the short-legged Dandie Dinmont. His coat’s crisp mixture of hard and soft hair in the blue and liver shades, as well as the long drop ear, puts him very close to the Bedlington in ancestry. Yet crosses involving various hounds and running dogs are suggested because of his distinctive physical traits.

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier’s height is 8-11 inches and the weight is 16-24 pounds.

coat - The coat of this dog should be a mixture of hardish and soft hair, although the hard hair should not be wiry.

color - The colors on this dog can be pepper or mustard.

eyes - The eyes will usually be a dark hazel.

Although the Dandie Dinmont of today doesn’t posses the gameness to bolt after badger, he is a kindly and dependable soul that makes a particularly obedient and lovable house dog. The Dandie has the same intelligent character and guarding ability that make most terriers good companions. While his appearance sets him apart from the other British terriers.

FUN FACTS

Sir Walter Scott immortalized the Dandie Dinmont in his novel Guy Mannering, in which one of the characters, a farmer named Dandie Dinmont, kept this breed.
