Novice Tracking/Article Search

Conditions

  • The general rules for competition apply to all CKC Events. Please refer to separate publications for more details.
  • Dogs must compete wearing only a flat collar.

 

Tracking/article search Level 1

Each dog begins with 50 points; Dogs must achieve a final score of 40 points, with each task completed, in order to receive a title for this event. Failure to complete any task results in no points being awarded and no title.

 

Tracking Session:

  • Dogs must compete on a long line (15-35 ft); tracking harnesses may be used but are not required.
  • The handler may select the track layer for this level only.
  • The dog must follow a track that is 10-15 minutes old, and find the tracklayer hidden at the end. The dog must greet the person in a friendly manner.
  • The handler must remain at least 6’ behind the dog once the dog leaves the scent pad.
  • The handler may restart once in the first 5 minutes of the track. However, the track must be completed within the specified time limit.
  • The dog must stay on the track until the task is completed or the maximum amount of time has elapsed.
  • The handler may verbally encourage the dog while the dog is tracking.
  • Judges should remain approximately 25 yards behind the handler.
  • The dog must track approximately 200 yards, with one 90 ° turn.
  • The dog shall have 10 minutes to complete the track.

 Article Search Session:

  • The search area must be 25ft 2, and the boundaries must be clearly marked.
  • The article will be similar to a man’s wallet or a man’s glove. It will be made of cloth or leather, and must lay somewhat flat when placed in the search area.
  • The judge must place one article inside the search area.
  • The article may be supplied by the handler, provided it does not exceed the requirements listed in #2 above.
  • The dog may compete off lead or on a long line.
  • The handler must state how the dog will identify the article in his declaration. Accepted methods of identification are to retrieve the article and return to the handler, sit at the article, down at the article, or stand over the article.
  • The handler may give 1 command to assist the dog into his position for identification.
  • The dog is required to find and identify the article within the maximum time of 1 minute.
  • The handler may not be in the search area with the dog or direct the dog in any way. Assistance of this nature will be scored as a zero.

Tracking/article search Level 2

( Points, scoring, and tasks are the same as in Tracking/Article Search I except for the following)

 

Tracking Session:

  • The dog must track approximately 300 yards, with two turns, and the track must be at least 15 minutes old.
  • The dog shall complete the track in 15 minutes.
  • The handler must remain at least 10’ behind the dog once the dog leaves the scent pad.

 Article Search Session:

  • The judge must place two articles that are approximately 2” x 4,” that may be similar to keys, business card holders or the like, in the search area. These articles must be placed at least 6’ apart.
  • If the handler chooses to give a command to assist the dog into his position for identification, the dog will be penalized 15 points for each command given.
  • The dog is required to find and identify both articles within the maximum time of 2 minutes.

Tracking/article search Level 3

( Points, scoring, and tasks are the same as in Tracking/Article Search II except for the following)

 

Tracking Session:

  • The dog must track 300 yards, with two or three turns, and the track must be 30 minutes old.
  • The track must include 50 ft across a hard surface (gravel, hard dirt without hard surface (gravel, hard dirt without grass, cement, or pavement may be used).
  • The dog shall complete the track in 15 minutes.
  • The handler must remain at least 15’ behind the dog once the dog leaves the scent pad.

 Article Search Session:

  • The judge must place three articles that are not larger that 2” x 4,” and are placed at least 6 feet apart, inside the search area.
  • The dog is required to search and find and identify all articles within the maximum time of 3 minutes.
  • The handler shall not give a command to assist the dog into his position for identification.

 

CONTINENTAL KENNEL CLUB PEFORMANCE

CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES

 

CKC offers two different options to achieve Performance Championship Titles. The first option is to earn a championship in one of the individual disciplines. If you choose this option, you can obtain a CKC Championship in Obedience (OBCh), Agility (AGCh), or Tracking (TRCh) by first successfully completing the Advanced title in that discipline. Then you must obtain 10 more passing scores in that discipline, competing at the advanced level. A dog may compete no more than twice on any event in one day.

CKC also offers a more rounded series of Championships called “Performance Championships.” To obtain a Novice Performance Championship (NCh), the dog must obtain a Novice level 3 title in all three levels of the Novice Performance disciplines (obedience, agility and tracking). To obtain an Intermediate Performance Championship (ICh), the dog must obtain the Intermediate titles in all three of the Intermediate Performance disciplines (obedience, agility and tracking) . To obtain an Advanced Performance Championship (ACh), the dog must obtain the Advanced titles in all three of the Advanced Performance disciplines (obedience, agility and tracking). To obtain a Master Championship (MCh), a dog must pass the Master’s Performance Program three times, at no less than three trials, on at least three separate days.
